日本の皆さん 英文の後に日本語があります。 Deus Residence B1F Gallery played host to Fukuoka based artist, Kenichi Oki’s exhibition: 'Whack-A-Mole’ . From early childhood Oki loved drawing and dreamt of becoming a Manga artist, he kept drawing not sticking to any particular method, material or style and before he knew it his work began selling. Deciding to be an artist for a living he moved to Bushwick, NY where he refined his own art style. This exhibit is a collection of base drawings in crayon which are then sketched over with color pencils in a way that scrapes away portions of the crayon wax giving a unique mild soft feeling to his work . Oki says “People are the best medium to communicate my message through” and often uses non-ethnic and non-gender human motifs in his work. 'Whack A Mole’, like the 70’s ‘Mole Buster’ arcade game its named after, the artist plans to pop up randomly in odd places globally later this year. 福岡を拠点に活動するアーティスト沖賢一のエキシビション’Whack A Mole’(日本語でモグラ叩き)が、先日DEUS B1F ギャラリースペースにて行われた。幼少期より絵を描く事が好きで子供の頃の夢は漫画家になる事だった沖は、画材、画法にこだわらず好きなように描き続けているうちにいつの間にか絵が売れるようになる。画家を生業にすることを決意した後単身アメリカに渡り、ブシュウィックNYでの生活の中でアーティストとしてのスタイルを確立する。 クレヨンでベースを描きその上から色鉛筆で削り落とすように色を塗ることで、作品に独特な柔らかい色味を持たせる。「人という被写体はメッセージを伝えるツールとして最も適している」と言う沖の作品には、人種や性別不明のキャラクターが多く描かれる。そんな作品に込められたメッセージを様々に感じとるのもアートの面白さである。 今後は国内に限らず海外での展示も予定しており、モグラ叩きのように世界中の街に飛び出して活躍することだろう。 Photos by Mariko Yasaka
